Dun Ui Mhaoliosa (Renmore Barracks) GALWAY
Since the construction of the Barracks in 1889 as a recruiting depot for the Connaught Rangers, it has seen various groups pass through its gates.
These groups have included the Connaught Rangers, The Irish Volunteers, both sides in the Civil War and An Cead Chath (1st Infantry Battalion). From this barracks, soldiers have departed for India, the Boer War, the Western Front, Gallipoli, and for peace keeping missions around the world from the Congo, to Lebanon, Somali, Afghanistan and Chad.
This museum is dedicated to preserving the memories of those men and women, treating each with respect and dignity, and making their story available to future generations.
The museum does not have a full time staff but has a few dedicated individuals who give freely of their time to cater for interested groups to come and experience the rich and varied story of over a hundred years in the life of a barracks.
