Research Guide - Irish Military Heritage

Part 2:

i.  Using Archives - Basic Tips:
ii. Review List of Archives

i. Using Archives: Basic Tips:

Before visiting an archive it is necessary to phone, write or e-mail beforehand; otherwise you may not gain admission. Archives are often subject to restrictions of space and resources, and it is important to remember that the staff cannot be expected to conduct researches for members of the public. You will not be allowed to use pens or biros in most archives, so bring a pencil and paper; most archives now also allow laptop computers. You will generally not be allowed to bring bags, coats or mobile phones into the archives. Archives are often extremely busy, so be prepared for occasional delays and remember that the staffs are often under considerable pressure. The documents that you consult must be treated carefully and with respect, for in many cases they are old and irreplaceable. You may be able to order photocopies of documents, though it may take some time for these to be furnished and will be subject to a charge.

Please note:

When phoning the Republic of Ireland from abroad use the prefix 00353+area code.

When phoning Northern Ireland from the Republic use the prefix 048 instead of prefix 028.

When phoning northern Ireland from outside the Republic or the United Kingdom use the prefix 0044+area code.
